AE Animated Credits for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs!
This summer, I worked as one of the Lead Animators on the 2D animated end credits of Sony's new 3D feature "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs".
In the 2.5 minute piece, all the characters from the movie are animated as 2D versions of themselves in a "cut-out" style that was meant to recall the old animated oddity "Twice Upon A Time" with a design style that had a "cheezy 70's" feel. We purposely removed some of the tweening to give the characters a jumpy, clunky movement that would feel more like "vintage" cut out animation.
The entire sequence was created in "2.5D" in After Effects using a combination of animated masks, puppet tools and jointed "cut-out" style animation. It was directed by Todd Hemker and Soyeon Kim (AKA Yellowshed: yellowshed.com) and much of the design work was by the great Paul Rudish of Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack fame.
I haven't even seen the whole movie yet, but the trailer looks promising! Be sure and check it out this weekend and stay for the end credits!
